The ASRT Foundation and Canon Medical Systems are accepting applications for the 2018 Safety FiRsT® grant program, an initiative that provides funds for radiologic technologists to improve workplace safety.

Canon’s support of the Safety FiRsT grant program, now in its fourth year, is a testament to the company’s dedication to promoting safety in the radiologic science profession.

The program awards two ASRT members a grant of up to $7,000 each to implement at their facility a radiologic technology safety program or a creative idea that improves technologist safety. Along with the grant, they will receive a copy of the ASRT institutional course, Safety Essentials, to share with department employees.

In the past, winners have used the funds to promote radiologic technology safety through the purchase of safety systems such as:

  • • A lifting device for their hospital.
  • • Nonmagnetic walkers and wheelchairs to ensure safety in the magnetic resonance suite.
  • • Lead-free aprons that are lightweight yet provide more protection than standard lead-based equivalents.
