This study examined the underlying factor structure of the Category Test. The seven subtests of the Category Test were subjected to two factor analyses, the first of which included only the seven subtests, while the second factor analysis included the subtests along with multiple scores from the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and the California Verbal Learning Test. The results suggest that, in a population composed primarily of persons referred to rule out a mild traumatic brain injury, the Category Test measures a unitary abstract reasoning ability. Furthermore, this skill appears to be distinct from the abilities measured by the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and the California Verbal Learning Test. Differences between this and previous studies are discussed and directions for future research are proposed.
