The purpose of the study was to compare the percent of women athletic directors and coaches at the collegiate level in South Carolina to the national collegiate percentages during the years of 1972 to 1991. It was also possible to compare the number of women's sport activities offered in South Carolina to the number of sports activities offered nationally at the collegiate level.

The data for the study was obtained from a survey that was sent to the athletic directors of all National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I and Division II schools in South Carolina. The national data was taken from a 1971 through 1992 study conducted by Acosta and Carpenter (1992b). The usable data was compiled and a one sample Z test was used to determine the significant difference for the percent of women coaches coaching women's sports. A one sample t-statistic test was employed to determine the significant difference for the number of women's sport activities per school.

The results of the statistical analysis in the three areas revealed: (1) There was a significant difference with a greater percent of women coaching women's sports activities for the years of 1980, 1982, and 1987 in South Carolina when compared to the United States at the collegiate level; (2) South Carolina had no women athletic directors at the NCAA Division I or Division II schools for the years 1984 through 1990; and (3) There was a significant difference in the number of women's sport activities per school which was less in South Carolina when compared to the United States at the collegiate level for the years 1978 to 1991.
