The ASRT Foundation Scholarship Review Committee has selected Chattanooga State Community College students Savannah Mathis, Lesley Akers and Dana Sloan as the recipients of the Weber State University School of Radiologic Sciences Student Global Engagement Scholarship. The students will travel to Sydney, Australia, March 2-13, 2023.

The scholarship awards $2,000 each to entry-level students participating in a study abroad program that is part of their radiologic technology education curriculum. The funds help offset costs such as airfare, housing and fees.

Savannah Mathis is pursuing an associate degree in radiologic technology. When asked what made her want to study abroad and why, she said, “Going to Australia is a once in a lifetime opportunity for someone like me who has barely traveled and hasn’t had any real experience outside of a small town. Being able to see how their equipment differs will give me a greater understanding of radiologic needs in different cultures.”

Lesley Akers is working toward an associate degree in radiologic technology. According to Akers, the trip to Australia will assist her in her goal to become a nuclear medicine technologist. “We will be visiting the ANSTO Opal Reactor to study nuclear technology. This is important to me because I am interested in going into the nuclear medicine field. We will also be visiting Cyclopharm, a radiopharmaceutical company, and the University of Newcastle, which makes Australia an ideal location.”

Dana Sloan completed her radiologic technology program and is now working on an associate of applied science degree in nuclear medicine technology. “I am looking forward to experiencing how nuclear medicine and molecular imaging are performed and gain a comparative understanding of the Australian health care system. My classmates and I will have the opportunity to collaborate with their nuclear medicine and radiologic technology students while experiencing the Australian culture.

The Weber State University, School of Radiologic Sciences, located in Utah, created the Student Global Engagement Scholarship to help provide students studying abroad unique academic and life experiences, enhancing the value of their education, building cultural competency and laying the foundation to become responsible world citizens.
