Regina Ley, A.S., R.T.(T), and Carole South-Winter, Ed.D., R.T.(R)(N), CNMT, were selected as recipients of the International Speakers Exchange Award for 2017 and will give presentations at conferences in Canada and England, respectively, this year. The award encourages knowledge sharing across borders and enables radiologic technologists to share important research findings or significant professional knowledge with their international colleagues. The ASRT Foundation has presented the award to medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals for more than a decade.
In April, Ms. Ley will present at the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists Annual Governance Conference in Ottawa, Ontario. Her presentation, “The Quest for Hakuna Matata – My Journey Into Community Global Outreach,” focuses on her experience as an ASRT Foundation Community Outreach Fellow in Kenya with the unique viewpoint of a veteran radiation therapist and two-time cancer survivor.
Ms. South-Winter will present at the United Kingdom Radiological Congress in Manchester, England, in June. Her presentation, “Opinion Leadership in Health Care: A Study of Ghana,” focuses on a research study that explored challenges to providing health care in rural areas of Ghana. Specifically, the study examined who members of the community identified as health care opinion leaders based on who they sought treatment from, including medical doctors, chemical shops, herbalists, prayer camps, family members, midwives and shrines or voodoo priests.
The ISEA program allows for advances in best practices and the newest information in the radiologic sciences to have a larger effect on the profession by reaching more medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals. It also provides speakers the opportunity to forge professional connections with international colleagues they would not otherwise meet. Applications for 2018 will be available in July and due on Oct. 1, 2017.
